I am not sure why the tubing for the door is less then the main framework. I will see what I can find out. I happen to know where frank lives in the event that I can't get ahold of him. LOL

He is, work is killing him. Worst case I will discuss it with him this coming weekend and post back. I know I can get him cornered as we have other business to go over. Well and maybe drink a beer also.

Anybody know how long it would take someone to create CUT FILES for the DPGF smoker, from the drawings ?

I just did my own from each page. Figured what I could build and purchased it in stages.

Looks at a piece of meat and wonders how many ways can I smoke that.

So the honest answer for the door tubing actually makes no difference since it's a surface mount door. 1.5 or 2 inch will work fine. Spoke with Frank this morning about it.

I ran into the same issue with 1 3/4" not being availabl . I talked to Frank and either 1 1/2" or 2" is acceptable. I went with 2". That way I only needed 1 size of insulation. It will slightly affect both the firebox and coal fill doors. The heights of the chute will be slightlyshort. I just welded it sealed, as it ddoesn'taactually effect anything.

Went an saw the welder/neighbor today :) He's going to order the metal and get started. One question I have is I am seeing alot of guys spot welding and stitch welding. I am going with thicker walled square tubing and heavier guage sheet metal for this build. Are the inside and outside metal walls fully welded, spot,or stitch welded permanently into place ?

The reason people spot/stitch/tack weld it to reduce warping. I have been tacking every 2-3in, then come back over & weld every third or fourth gap until I have welded the whole edge/join to spread the heat more evenly.

Squiggle, Thanks. That is what i figured. The welder will do what he thinks will work best, i am sure. Going with heavier metal should make it a little easier for him to weld, less likely to get heat warpage if he's careful. I told him its fully welded :) Does anyone know if the kit from BSS will work with the double pan GF smoker ? Any where else to order latches and gaskets from ?

I believe BSS is a sister site to this one & it's owned by the same guys(correct me if I'm wrong Frank) & the kits are designed to suit all the plans(another sister site to this one) :kewl:

I couldn't find descent gaskets anywhere else and the prices are pretty fair on the bss page. I checked out grainger for latches as well...same style of latches but in some different configurations.

Actually we used to own it. We sold it to Justin Martin of island outdoor a couple years ago. We work very closely with Justin on that site and many others. Smokerbuilder Manufacturing makes Most of the iron parts he sells

BSS emailed me today, they will make me up a custom kit. I don't want the tie down rings. I want a different thermometer, one that is threaded.

An so it begins. The welder has the firebox, charcoal chute, c channel all welded up. He just needs to weld the three together. He gave me some of the square tubing to insulate as well :) I will try to get some pictures of the other pieces on Monday, when i drop the insulated square tubing off.

I would love to have a gravity feed again but I just don't want the weight.
