So I have cut firebox door out/hinged and gasketed both inside and the door itself.. possibly overkill, but that sucker is sealed.
Question...I seen a thread where the fb floor isn't firebricked. what is the layout most used? Were bout to lay firebrick, and I want to make sure we don't make a mistake. Another thing...Can someone show me a pic/pics of the inside of their FB w grates/baskets? Id like to get a good idea of what to build. Thank you for the help guys...Its awesome.

Peace.

Did you allow for the brick to take up space in the FB when you put the numbers in the calc? You may have answered this already but I don't recall.

This is my trailer rig FB, it has a few changes since this picture, ash pan and large holes at the bottom of the front plate. I got the idea for the holes from FC

Yeah, we bought the plans online, so there wasn't any calculating on our part, nor did we even think of firebricks going into this. Afterthought...So I'm guessing were not going to be able to use em without messing w the calcs. Oh well. progress...

Peace.

So we got the fb all finished but the containment I need to burn the wood in. Heres a pic of what I did for the sliders..Just a lil deflector to keep the crud out of it.
Also replaced galv drainpipe..Took longer for me to find a bare steel pipe threaded on one end around this place, than it did to replace it...

I'm going to put what ive learned right here to the test. Supposedly were getting a pro to come show us how to use it...Let you know how it goes tomorrow.

Any suggestions/ wisdom for our first burn in tomorrow? Or any suggestions otherwise..Spray things w PAM? Max temp we should bring it up to?

I would spray everything down with oil and run it up to around 300-350 or so for a few hours. I like to play with the intakes while I'm seasoning my pits so that I can get an idea of how it responds to different adjustments.

I would run it up to 350 and let it stay at least there for a few hours, then spray cooking spray or olive oil on everything inside then run it a couple more hours. Then start adjusting things while cooking some pig candy to reward myself for the good work.

All went well today...Came up slowly to 350ish and held there for several hrs..Have to say it was a success. There are a few little issues we need to address, but no biggies. Thanks guys for helping out along the way, this is a pretty damn impressive piece of steel, if I may say so myself..

Thanks again gents!

Peace!

Thanks squiggle! Tested me for sure. Ive never built something that big before, My go to tools were my miller plasma cutter, Miller 252 MIG, and the old miluakee portable bandsaw...Don't leave home without it...Made cutting those mitered shelves a breeze....Note to self...If you need to use the saw semi-continuously, have a few batteries ready if you have a cordless one...Eats em up quicklike....

Peace

Ok so before we paint it, I decided to take the end we cut off and had some flames drawn on it.
I had a friend who worked w me here in the shop..he passed away far too soon. Dennis woulda been all over this thing building it w us, He always liked to draw flames...So I had a family member of his draw these to show Dennis some love...I also put his initials in the middle of them.
This week were doing some venison.. Keep ya posted!

So today we officially broke her cherry. Got her up to temp and to be on the safe side, threw a couple chicken halves on w Cajun rub. Not gonna lie. They were the most juicy delicious bites of poultry that ever went down this gullet. Sorry mom. What a relief it is to know how easy it is to run this thing if you fabricate things as per drawings...kinda...and do your homework.
Thanks guys. This thing means a whole bunch more to me than just a smoker. We have a fall festival here on the mtn that were going to feed with it every year and then some... I'm soooooooooooo happy that it works better than I ever thought...Salute...

Sorry no pics...I forgot my phone this am. dummy...

PEACE!
