baffle plate gap?

Post by saleen9973 » February 16th, 2016, 9:13 pm

How do I figure the right baffle plate gap for my set up? My CC is 43x14, FB is 22x12, I have a 3" exhaust that is roughly 17" long, I have 2 3" pipes from the FB to CC. My plate now has a 6" gap at the end is this too large? How do I figure out how big it needs to be?

Looks like you'll need about 19 sq.in. BP gap. Guessing at the radius of the belled end at 12", you'd need no more than a 2" gap and 13.5" width. You can use my throat calc for cylindrical tanks to simulate what you've got.

Use the pitcalc and plug in your numbers. Two 3" pipes for you're throat is small at 14". The pitcalc recommends 19". I would make something adjustable if possible to get a feel for what it does.

Thanks, I just made a piece of 1/4 inch steel with the rounded end that will fit up against the end of the tank. I can now cut a few different sizes of 1/4 and see how long or short the pit likes it then weld it in when done. Thank you again.

BP is 26.5" and FB Throat is about 161 square inches. Tank is a 250 and 30" wide. With the rounded tank end in the front I'm not sure how to calculate the BP Gap. Can anybody give me a suggestion?

If you can guesstimate the radius of the bell end my throat calc will get you close.

Measure the bell end depth from where the tank starts to change shape to the end. Internal dims are better but not necessary.

Might be time for a new calculator!

If you put a straight across the outide of the cap you have 3 inches before the shape changes.

I think I'll go with a 7" BP opening and call it good. FB throat opening is about 8.5
Width of the BP is 26.5

I'm getting ~160 for your throat and the bell end at the BP height will give you ~40 of that, leaving 120 / 26.5 = 4.5. So to get ~ 160 BP gap you're at 4.5 + 2.3 (bell end distance) = 6.8"

Here's the beginning of a new calc.

http://planetcalc.com/5943/

Plugging in your numbers I get 7" for a 100% gap.

Turns out it was tougher than I thought. If you had a tank with a spherical end, it has a good chance of being bigger than your throat so I had to re-code it. Still not quite ready for prime time.

Thanks fellas!

Reading through this post I imagine it should be easier without a bell on the end of the tank. I've read some other posts that talked about imagining the tank upside down and wanting to keep the flow steady and not have any areas that constrict.

So if you could correct or validate my understanding.

For example, the tank that I'm working with is 24 by 36, my Throat area is giving me an opening of 46.66, 3.85 inches (went with 4). So if I'm wanting to match the area so that the flow of heat is steady around the baffle plate I need to match it.

If it took the 46.66 and divided by my baffle plate width of 18 that gives me an opening of 2.59 inches should allow there to be no constriction of the heat from the FB.

is that right? The calculator is giving me 3.6.

initially I was going to just leave an inch and a half opening but ran across the posts about math :)

24 x 36 tank is ~60 gallons. A standard sized FB would need a throat of ~40 sq in. I'm guessing you're using a cylinder, not a tank with belled ends. In that case your numbers make sense. 2.59" would be the correct BP gap.

If you're using a cylinder you don't really need the BP gap calc. If you want to use it tho, enter 0.1 for the bell end depth. I'll re-code it to accept a 0 for bell end depth.
