2- 120 Gal Tank Build

Post by reflynn » November 10th, 2016, 11:36 am

Hello all I have been smoking for a while and just fixing to start on my first build. Hope I can pick your brains on this build I will be using 2 120 gal Vertical Propane tanks measuring 30" Diameter X 40" Height, 1 tank will set vertically with bottom half 30" D X 20" H being Firebox top half part of cooking chamber and warmer. The second tank will set Horizontally, and will be the main cooking Chamber with a reverse flow plate at bottom above the FB - CC opening. will post my Smoker Print and some pics, when i figure out how to insert images

Welcome :welcome:

That looks like a very interesting project. I'll definitely be following along on this one.

Welcome! I'd put a shadow plate at the top of the FB so the BP section doesn't get too hot.

Where exactly would that shadow plate reside and while we are speaking of the BP what would be minimum thickness, I have in mind using a sheet of 1/16" stainless i have on hand all else will be 3/16" and 1/4" carbon

for the bp i would use 1/4, and take advantage or the radiated heat, anything smaller imo would warp due to the fact the bp takes a beating of heat from the firebox, and :welcome:

:yth: The shadow plate would be about an inch lower than the section of BP that's directly above the FB.

Interesting.....I see the potential to run really hot on this design. I'm interested to see how it works out.

Dirtytires, BigT and all i would love some advice on this build, that is why i am here. I have a couple other tanks but these turned up and became cream of the crop for me, the design is fluid at the moment still evacuating tanks so still fresh into the design mode

Your design is basically an RF with a warming cabinet which is a tried and true design. There are a lot of builds that in the RF section that have plenty of pictures that can give you some ideas. If you get all of your dimensions right it'll work like a dream but if you don't it could be a real pain. The shadow plate is really a ceiling in the firebox with a dead space between it and the BP, it keeps you from having a hotspot in the chamber above the FB. I think you're on the right track just do your homework on the dimensions and you'll be set.

OK so concerning the Shadow plate.... I just picked up my 4' X 8' X 1/4" steel plate, before i start cutting i want to make sure that the shadow plate and the BP will both be 30" x 30" diameter as in my sketch of the vertical / FB section of my build. I will be cutting the Vertical section in half to these 2 plates in place. then will begin working the horizontal side

Your sketch concerning the shadow plate is correct. I'm not familiar with the pit calculator that you used so I'm not sure about your other dimensions.

Done some tweaking on my original Smoker plan. Have a few questions. To catch you up to where I’m at. I am using 2 120 Gal. vertical propane tanks 30” Diam. 46” Tall. Currently these tanks have been evacuated and now setting full of soap and water, will drain soon and refill with more soap and water before cutting. I have 4’ X 8’ X ¼” plate ready to start cutting. Also have 2 20” pieces of 1/4'” pipe on hand for use for my stacks. I am close to ready to start turning and burning, but got to have a few things clear first. Hope I’m not being too much of a nuisance here.

So on the diagram I have several points numbered, I will refer to them by their numbers. To start with, do I even need to worry about putting item #5. In place, and if I do, is the 4” pipe large enough, and would I also have to enlarge the FB? If not, do I need to still install Item #8 Stack two? How deep into tank does Item #7, Stack one, need to be and does that depth take into the recommended overall length currently Calculated 8” diameter for a total of 10.9“ length.

On to item 1 thru 4 is this over kill? do I need the thermal insulation item # 1 between the two plates, or would just air be fine. Is the 3/16” plate #2 adequate or does it also need to be 1/4'”. Also should the Warming chamber have a direct opening from the FB for Extra heat.

Is installing the Flapper Valve Item #6 between FB And CC a good idea, and will it help regulate heat in the CC.

Thanks all, and any and all comments, advice, critiques -or +, are appreciated.
