Just putting the question out there... Mini GF build

Post by ajfoxy » January 24th, 2017, 11:04 pm

A quick question to draw on the collective wisdom and knowledge.

I am about to start building a couple of mini-gf for myself and a family member. I was wondering if there is any merit / demerit / doen't matter ... as to putting the stack at the back of the unit? Still on top of course, but not in the middle. And even making it either square or rectangle. I believe that the stack shape/size is not quite so critical on the gravity feed units, but maybe it is.

Any thoughts, ideas or "been there done that" type answers.

I've been told it doesn't matter on a vertical smoker, as long as the smoke is travelling freely. :kewl:

Sweet, at the back and square she is then. Trying to utilise the vast array of offcuts and odd pieces I seem to have accumulated over the years. Also I've noticed sometimes on the double pan we get a bit of what I would call "light tar dribble" from the central stack. Nothing to be really concerned with just thought it would be easier to direct it if the stack was at the rear of the cook chamber.

I would like to make the top of mine dome shaped and the stack in the center. Don't mind me I always treat myself that way.

I moved mine to the side opposite the fire box. No chance of dripping on the food there.

Michael303 how did that work for you? Did you get any issues with smoke not getting to all of the cc?

Have you got any pics of yours.. OK let me clarify that any pics of your smokestack on the side?

I worried about the same thing prior to my mini build and ended up putting it in the middle as plans show, I've used mine in ambient air temps ranging from 37*F to 90*F and if its dripped on my food I haven't noticed it.

It's opposite the fire box so smoke coverage is fine.
