My RF build

Post by Squiggle » March 27th, 2017, 5:20 am

So I decided to knock up a little RF to keep at the restaurant as more of a show piece, I'm probably not going to do much cooking on it as I'll still be using the GF for a majority of the smoking & I don't want to take it to work. I might do some snags on it a couple of times a week but not much else. The plan is to give it to a mate when we renovate the house to include a commercial kitchen & move the restaurant to the front quarter of the house(will be the same size as the current premises but less commute time to work, even though the commute is now only 900m, lol)

So here goes, I scored a car LPG tank that's 3mm thick, cut off the mounts

Image

Cut the door, but I think I'll do square doors cause of the massive LPG fittings

Image

& I cut the hole for the stack

Image

These are the numbers, let me know if I've done something wrong as my imperial/metric conversions always suck, hahaha. =))

The specs will change when I decide on the final door shape & I'm thinking I'll used fire bricks in the FB. How long should I make the shadow plate? I'm undecided between 6"-12", I was thinking 12" but the tank is only 850mm(about 34") so I was thinking shorter might be better :?

I have a fair idea most of the time, we get US TV, movies & books here in Aus, but you guys don't get much Aussie stuff over there so our slang isn't as well known. :D

Looking sharp there Squiggle. I'll be following the build, not because I want a RF, but because you do interesting stuff... :D

I've started cutting material for my mini build (actually two being built at the same time). After the double pan the cc looks minute.

Hahaha, yeah it's pretty small compared, should be a snap doing two after you've done the double pan, but make no mistake, it's still pretty heavy. :kewl:

Your photo of the chimney cut out looks exactly the same as when I cut mine. I like the 3 mm thickness. I wish my CC was that thick. Looking forward to seeing your build....

I have taken a few ideas from your build & I'm looking for fire bricks as we speak, I was thinking of doing your style of hinge but that went out the window when I was forced to go with square doors. :kewl:

Hey Squiggle, if you really have your heart set on the hinges, then put them on back of the square part of the cook chamber. You can then open it up like a car hood.. you know for cleaning and such.. =))

All right I'll bugger off now... :D

I am very pleased with the fire brick. You will have to adjust the size of your FB so the volume is right with the fire brick installed. If I built another RF I wouldn't bother with the hidden hinges....way too much trouble. Really when you think about it hinges on the outside don't take anything away from the look of the smoker. Square doors will be interesting. I'm looking forward to seeing that.

So,I'm still trying to figure out (of course,it's too late now,I've already built it) the infamous shadow plate.
Does it get welded right TO the BP?or just under it an inch or so?
When I built my 120 RF,I welded a 10"-12" x 12" piece of 1/4" plate TO the BP.Hence I have a hot spot on the FB side.
Did I screw up?
Can it be fixed?

Hahaha, you are a cheeky bugger AJ. =))

Yeah, I only calculated the internal volume on the sheet, I'll add the thickness of the bricks when I get them. :kewl:

The shadow plate is supposed to go from the top of the FB & extend into the area under the BP(about an inch or two below the BP) to prevent the hotspot on the FB end of the BP & even out the CC temps from side to side.

I didn't use a shadow plate on my patio sized RF, just the baffle plate. Its only 1/8 inch so I don't get as much radiant heat as a thicker plate, but I don't have a hot spot. Its actually about 5 to 10 degrees warmer on the side away from the FB.

Please don't take that as an endorsement for 1/8 steel. I only used that because that is how thick my tank is. It was amajor PITA. :headwall:
My next one will be at least 1/4.

I don't know Big T, but TP has got to be up there. :D

Today I did the sides & top For the door section & after putting it together I'm tossing up whether to make it 2" taller, as it is the doors will be about 8" & with the shelf there should be about 6" which should be fine for any chunk of meat but I think I want it taller. :kewl:

Another question, I know the stack measurement starts from the top of the CC, but that mean the top of the doors or the tank?

Well there ya go.
To have 4" clearance between BP and CG,I had to weld said BP at top of FB opening.

There's only one thing left for you to do SHRN, build another smoker! :D

This is only a little unit so I'm only going to have about 2-3" above the BP to CG & maybe 1/2-1" from the FB to BP. Looks like I answered my own question about making the doors taller as the BP will only be about an inch or two below the bottom of the doors. :kewl:
