Naturally aspirated GF (that's a GF without fan)

The title sums it up: can I run a GF without a fan (guru etc)? Can it naturally get enough oxygen through the commonly used 2" pipe?
I want to use a electronically controlled valve not a fan.
Everybody seems to be using a guru which might be an indication that they need the forced airflow.

Yep, they are steady as a rock without a fan, it just takes a bit of fiddling to get it to sit at the right temp. The only problem is that it takes a long time to get up to temp(about 2hrs) & the recovery time is longer too, but if you just open the side FB door while starting & recovering you can reduce the times by about half.

It seems you guys might be one step short of agreeing on how to combine quantum field theory and general relativity.

So the fan really helps during starting and recovery but during cooking small adjustments via a valve are sufficient to keep the fire burning. Come to think of it, not using the fan during the cook might prevent overshoot. Adjusting a valve is always more subtle.

I always set the valve to a little below what it would be when not using the fan & that keeps it from overshooting. You can always get a BBQ Dragon for starting up, I'm told they work really well.
