Did the first burn today to season the wombat :D

Image

After coating the inside with spray oil I got it up to 200C(about 390F) for about an hour & a half.

Image

After that I closed the vents down to about 1/4 & it sat at 135C(275F) for the next two hours so far while adding a stick every 45-50mins. I'll run it for a few more hours & see how it goes. :kewl:

Great job on the Wombat Squiggle I like how compact it is. Looks like you're getting great heat which I'm sure is largely due to the fire brick. The boxed cook chamber is also a great idea. What are you using for wood? Did you find the chamber hotter at one end?

Thank dude, I'm using oak at the moment & ive been given some wattle(acacia family) to try later. I've had to close the vents down a bit more as the temp was climbing a bit, but as with all smokers, I'm still learning how the wombat works. The temp is as even as I could ever want, literally no difference end to end, there was at first but now it's at operating temp it's even steven. :kewl:

Well that's good that temp is even. I'm finding mine is consistently hotter at the throat end of the BP. Not a big issue as generally I just place the thicker chunks of critter at the warmer end. Its only a difference of about 10 degrees. Oak is not an option for the area I'm in. I would love to try some though. Apple is the go to around here. I notice you didn't put a shelf across the front. Is that to follow or on purpose?

Great results! Congratulations on your new Wombat. You will see a big difference in smoke ring using this little fella. Stick burners are hard to beat, but does require you to pay attention to it.

Oak can be found in eastern Canada but not in the west. That's where I am....Alberta. Poplar willow spruce and pine with the odd birch in the more northern end of the province is whats native around here. None of which I would use for smoking wood.

I think the even temps are mainly cause of the shadow plate.

I only have oak cause I was lucky enough to work on a truffle farm while we were pruning all of the 22000 trees & I was allowed to take as much as I wanted, otherwise it was going to be burnt. Not much else available around here, mainly eucalypt & pine which are unusable.

There is a sheet on another thread that has info on all smokable trees & I'm pretty sure willow is on the list. :kewl:

Thanks RC I'm sure it will be a big learning curve, I've definitely learnt that you can't take your eye of it that's for sure. :D

I think you will find that after the pit is at Temp for about an HR it will settle out and you should be able to just add a log every 45 min to an HR using the stack damper and firebox air as a throttle.
Enjoy your reverse flow Great Food is coming soon from it .

The only reason I didn't put a shelf was that the smoker isn't very deep & feels very top heavy & I thought it might mess with the balance. I'll probably regret it later but that just means I'll have to build another smoker :D

It's good to hear that it performed as you expected it would. I see that thin blue smoke bellowing out of the stack :kewl:

I completely understand the last thing you need is to have a wreck and dump the thing over in the middle of a cook.

I see a very well made unit you should be proud.

Hey Squiggle, any chance that you could get the picks back up for this one?

I want to build a small smoker to haul to picnics and this might work
