Mechanical Iris Baffle

Post by inkslinger » May 25th, 2017, 8:59 am

Has anyone here seen or attempted a mechanical iris for a baffle?

I mean.. not the most space efficient, but super cool looking.

That would be beautiful--where might one put that where someone could actually see it in its mechanical magnificence though? External firebox vents is all I can think of but holy cow would it be cool! I'm not sure how it would react to uneven heating though in terms of binding up--lots of slender bits of metal expanding at different rates?

It would definitely have a cool factor. Not sure how practical it would be in the field though. It would have to live on the outside to exhibit all its coolness.

Definitely a very cool idea, but I'd be worried about expansion & binding.

Here is a pic of one made from wood.

True, expansion and binding is an issue... but because of the nature of what it would be used for in this application, the bind points could easily be loosened up to allow for expansion

The "little bits" dont need to be as slender as in that 3d model. The designs on these things vary drastically. It could easily be simplified as well as bulked up a bit in some areas.

Regardless, I was just chatting with a friend and he mentioned these mechanisms. This lead me down the rabbit hole on Google and now I want to make one. The oporation is so simple it would be perfect for a baffle system. Could be used on an intake, a smoke stack, or in my case I may use one to make an asjustable throat.

These thoughts are what I love about this forum, the members here are always looking for a way out of the conventional thinking box.

Inkslinger, seeing those real-life ones I want them right on my CC doors so I can pass temp probe wires through or 'peek' without opening the whole door.

Overkill? Absolutely. But totally.bad.ass.!

The bottom line is what does the Q the smoker produces taste like. I had rather have fantastic tasting Q from a junky looking smoker than mediocre tasting Q from a beautiful smoker with all the bells and whistles.
