Stumps clone build

Post by Eeny » May 20th, 2017, 4:34 pm

Just started my build. Its the plans or the middle size gravity fed (stumps clone, firebox on right.

Being built in a friends workshop as he has the space and equipment (not to mention way better fabrication skills than I do, I can weld but tend to spend 3 times longer with the grinder than he does!). I've converted most of the plans to metric, but the cook chamber and outer panels will be made to fit as was worried about the slight differences once the inches were mm. I've mad a couple of changes, doors are external like the double pan, and also made it a couple of inches wider, and a couple shallower so it will be roughly same volume, but will fit through my garden gate better.

All the box was ordered and cut to size by a local supplier It's 50 x 50mm 2mm wall, slightly thicker than in the plans as its the thinnest I could obtain and even that thin wasn't a normal stock item for them.

Image

Stuffed it with insulation
Image

Made a start welding her together, I welded the bottom frame, and my buddy welded thew uprights, felt I'd reached my fab limits for the day at that point.

Image

Firebox/charcoal chute are on order, 6mm and 12mm, having it cut to size but will take anither 10 days or so before it's delivered

My buddy has far better fab skills than me, he built this owl out of odd bits of stainless he had lying around, wingspan is around 4 ft

Nice owl dude, your mate does nice work.

Looks like you've made a great start. I know all too well about the fun of conversions, I chose to use 40mmx1.6mm for my frame, yours is going to be heavy duty. :D

Don't forget to leave out the right pieces in the frame so you can fit the FB assembly in place when it's ready. :kewl:

I do like the owl. And the build is coming along nicely. As Squiggle said, don't forget to leave out the top rail at the Chute/FB end. This will help you put the chute/fb/transfer tube assembly in place without a lot of hassle. And if your buddy has a brake get him to bend up the cook chamber... unless of course you like to practice your welding and grinding.
And don't sweat the minor differences in metric/inch conversion. It is not a nuclear power plant. There is plenty of tolerance to play with.

When I changed the plans to metric I added the missing arrow to the top rail on the plans. :-)

Some more done, top part of the frame is on (minus the parts to get the firebox in)

Image

also made the legs (this is my iffy welding!) and bolted the wheels on, they hold 250Kg per wheel (550lb in weird american measurements :P )

Image

the wheel plates are a little on the big side, they are 12mm as my buddy had enough bar in the right width hanging around so it was way cheaper than buying some in!

Image

The firebox parts arrived from the laser cutter on Friday, here waiting for me when I got home, the main cook chamber panels should be ready early this week as well, having the back and 2 sides bent for me to save welding and distortion.

Not posted an update for a little while, but been plenty done in the little time i have to work on her.

Firebox parts welded together

Image

Image

some free 12mm rebar (saved from the skip) added to transfer tube opening

Image

Image

removable grill made from rest of free 12mm rebar

Image

Image

Largest 3 sides of cook chamber bent and tacked in along with top of cook chamber, opening cut for transfer tube

Image

Image

Firebox test fitted (damn, that thing is heavy!)

Image

Image

firebox won't be welded in until Steve has done the bottom of the cook chamber, I'm going to start making the doors this week.
Air intake will be via a servo controlled valve and fan controlled by a heatermeter, will be no intake pipe sticking out, just a grill to cover the fan.

I don't want to ask you to do any extra work, BUT the tacks inside the chute may cause some bridging, ok maybe it won't. But if it were mine I would grind them out before I went any further it will only be harder later if it proves to be important. I made mine smooth to try and insure it didn't happen.

Ok, so some more has been done this week

Steve has made the bottom plate, bent and angled to drain via a short pipe through the bottom (will add a drip pan underneath)

Image

Image

Image

All welded in along with the top of the cook chamber

Image

Firebox now welded in

Image

Image

& Remaining frane parts welded in

Image

Image

I've started on the air intake, piece of 2" stainless pipe, sleeved inside with some mild steel from the scrap pile, started to make the butterfly rod. There will be a steel disc attached to this, with a silicon rubber seal (should take the temp, is a cut down baking sheet!) this will be operated by an MG90 servo, controlled by the heatermeter, a fan will be fitted to the end of this pipe, again contolled by the heatermeter.

Image

And apparently this will be big enough to cook a person, always useful to know!
