Help find the correct insulation

Post by BBQChris » July 24th, 2017, 6:27 am

Hey Guys. Chris here from South Africa.
Ive decided I'm going to be building a smokerplans.net Double pan gravity feed.
I'm over in South Africa so I need some advice please.

1. Will this product do for my insulation? http://insulationproductssa.co.za/insul ... l-product/

2. Can I use it for the inside of my tubing as well? Like tear it up and stuff it in the tube

3. What thickness should I get?

4. Is this the correct gasket for the doors http://www.ebay.com/itm/NOMEX-High-Temp ... SwrklU3RGk

Then last question.
Is it worth building the frame and sheets from stainless steel? or will painted mild steel be ok? Do you guys paint the inside and backs of the sheets and frame?

Sorry for all the questions.

Welcome to the crew.
1 & 2: Yes that insulation will do fine and you can cut it up and stick it in the tubes. No problem at all.
3: 50 mm thick. It does compress a bit but you don't want to compress it too much otherwise you get rid of the air gaps in the material.
4: That should do it. Just be aware you are going to need a fair bit of it on a DP. Cook chamber door, firebox door, chute door.
Painted mild steel will be fine. Unless of course you have a bunch of spare stainless and know how to weld stainless neatly as well.
Probably not a good idea to use galvanised tube or sheet.

No problem with lots of questions. The only silly question is the one not asked.

Thanks guys.
I'm worried about it rusting. How long do these last?
Stainless is going to be too expensive

No, use the insulation you first listed. It handles up to 650deg C. If you want to you can paint the inside of the steel sheet. Some paint will come away when you weld though. And unless you are right on the coast they should last for many years. Worst case you might have to re-skin it in ten years if you are living in a highly corrosive area. If you are up in Joburg you will be fine. It would take around 100 years to rust.
Don't take short cuts with the insulation and gaskets and you will have a great unit.

Thanks mate. I just ordered a 6m roll of the first one I listed.
I am at the coast so will probably paint the inside with some high heat paint

That lock would do it. However the postage will make it horrendous. Look locally for a cold room slam latch. There must be a few in South Africa.

What size square tubing should I make the FB door and chute door from? Over here I can only get 50mm and 38mm.

I'm going to do the front door from 50mm but I'm thinking that might be a bit big for the smaller doors.

50 mm is fine. That way you can use the same insulation all the way through.

Is insulation used in the curbs and door frames as well?
