Start of a long journey.

Post by Canada-Q » September 12th, 2017, 5:04 pm

Okay Gang, I finally got to go see what my metal fan shop has produced for me so far. Immediately, my first thought is "that's a lot of rust!" It's nice to see something start to materialize a little bit at least. Anyway, thoughts on treatment for the rust situation? I'll have plenty more questions for when I get to the slightly warped CG door situation that I can already foresee.

Any other comments are also welcome with gratitude!

That looks like all of the pieces to build a nice smoker, you just have to put the puzzle together. I would clean it up with a wire wheel on a grinder and you can have it sand blasted when you get finished with it.

I bet you don't even need the sand blasting. Wire wheel and don't leave it out in the weather and you will be fine.

Well I'm having some complications with poor work by the welding shop that supplied my CC, so today we started on the FB. I gotta say, I'm pretty proud of my first ever welds! Granted, I have a top notch teacher/coach/sensei guiding me. His extensive shop and supplies are quite a big help as well [emoji1360]ImageImageImageImage

You should be proud of those welds.

Looking at those beads I never would have guessed that they were your first ever.

Are you going to insulate that fire box at all?

I have no plans to insulate. If I have troubles with heat retention in the future I might think about it.

I am because I'm in the middle of a rebuild myself and am putting on a new fire box. Trying to decide whether to insulate or not.

Finally got back to work recently, so here we go with an update. Got the vents done on the firebox, and attached it to the CC. The baffle plate fit the cook chamber perfectly to spec, which was quite nice. Finally, we got it set up on jack stands and are getting ready to build a stand.

Nice work....great progress.

Just a safety note, another post on here just yesterday said he rolled his smoker off a set of jack stands and crashed it to the ground. Luckily, nobody got hurt.

Thanks for that, I’ll be sure to be extra careful while it’s on there [emoji1360]
