Hello from East Tennessee

Post by PatriotBBQ » October 1st, 2017, 7:12 pm

Hello Everyone!

Novice builder here from the Volunteer State - Tennessee, Knoxville area. Years ago my family had a few restaurants located in another state. One of these specialized in BBQ. My father built his own smoker and now I am going to follow in his footsteps..

Just purchased, what I think is, a 250gal propane tank to start on. I've got grandiose ideas for this. I just hope it turns out how I envision it.. Hopefully Ill be posting pictures of it and seeking all the wisdom from all who are here...

Up at the top of the page there are some links to some calculators to help you nail down the dimension of your firebox and throat (opening from the FB to the cooking chamber) as well as the stack.

I highly recommend that you consider using them. They Work!

Ask the questions that you need to. The folks around here will happily share their wisdom and expertise.
Remember to post the pics of your progress.

Well, I now have the tank in the garage and I am currently removing the old paint. I believe the tank volume is 260.13 gal.

Here is what the calculator is telling me.

Diameter Length Volume (in³)
Cook Chamber Size 30.24 in. 90.5 in. 64,998.31 in³

Length Width Height Actual Volume (in³) Recomended Volume (in³) % Recomended Size
Firebox Size 28 in. 28 in. 28 in. 21,952.00 in³ 21,666.10 in³ 101.32%

Chimney Diameter Rec. Chimney Volume Rec. Chimney Length
Chimney Size 8 in. 1097.6 in³ 21.847133758 in.

Length Width Intake Area (in²) Count
Air Intake 5 in. 3 in. 65.86 in² 4.39

Throat Area (in²)
Throat Size 175.616 in.

Please let me know if I am missing anything..

The only thing that jumps out at me are the size of your intakes, at that size you'll need 4.5 of them to achieve the maximum recommended size. I would increase the size of them a little bit so you only need 2 of them and put one on each side of the FB so you can adjust them if you get a direct wind blowing into one of them.

Welcome to the crew!

The FB is just barely big enough, I think you would do well to add an inch in any direction and allow it to be 105% to 107% and you will be sure to have a nice air flow.

Thank you all for your help.. I have a few questions if you all could help me on...

There are 4 vents on the top of this tank and only one on the bottom. The vents on top have been open for some time. The one on the bottom is closed. The interior of the tank may have rust damage on the bottom being it was open..

#1 - Would you cut the top vents and weld them shut and then cut the doors out or would you cut the bottom vent out and make the doors on the other side?

#2 - What would be the dimensions of the doors for this size of RF Smoker??
