Started a Double Pan GF

Post by Bricklayer2 » October 18th, 2017, 12:49 pm

I finally stated my Double Pan GF using the plans I purchased here. I plan on making a few minor mods to make it my own. So any mods you think I should add I am open to all suggestions. Here is my shake down project. Man I am rusty (no pun intended) I have welded on a lincoln 225 Buzz Box a long time just not in the last few years. So I purchased a Hobart 210MVP Mig welder. So I had to build a cart.

Nice cart.

I too would like to know any modifications that are useful, as I will be starting my build in a few weeks, when I receive my steel.

If you would like information about building your own heatermeter or having someone build one for you, feel free to ask any questions you may have.

i added a recessed shelf in mine, just right of the front door. Not too big, but just big enough to hold my Heatermeter ATC and i plan on drilling and installing a through pipe to run my probe wires.

I have been thinking about a couple penetrations for probe wires and I was going to use a high temp silicon plug to seal around lines.

OK, now I have questions. As I told earlier, I have stick welded quiet a few years. I have never Mig welded. Check these welds and make any suggestions or comments, I am in a learning curve with this machine but I already love it. I think I may have a little time on the DP tomorrow afternoon. So any suggestions will be appreciated. :kewl:

Too Slow? What do you think?

I do like how clean the weld is after I finish but seams like I may have more filler build up compared to my stick welding. I am running about 18 PSI on the gas. Is that about average?

I would try turning the wire speed down a few inches and see if those beads lay a bit flatter. But they look like they will work.

:yth: or travel a bit faster. Probably easier to turn the wire speed down just a bit.

Less wire is probably a big part. You may want to get your gun closer to the work to reduce stick out. Make sure your gas is flowing 20 cfm when your welding too.

I have a question, are the horizontal bars at the bottom on the wrong end of the smoker? Now I'm just going off my mini plans & the DP may be different, but aren't the small horizontal bars meant to go on the FB side, not the CC side? :-o

Squiggle you have a good eye. I am going to place the CC door on the end of the smoker instead of the long side of the cooker. I welded a piece of 2"X4" tube to weld the end of the heat transfer tube to. This will work better for my application. Actually working on heat transfer tube today. So I will try to post some new pics tonight. :kewl:

I was able to work a little on the smoker yesterday. I had some 5/8" thick plate so I used it in the front and back of the FB. Everything else on the FB is 1/2" thick. Here is what I have so far, any suggestions will be appreciated. :kewl:

At this point I removed the FB / HTT to do the final welding on them. Here is the finished dry fit.
