How the flatten .250 steel sheet

Post by Heatermeter builder » November 21st, 2017, 3:38 pm

I'm making the double pan gravity and I picked up my .250 inch precut material and when I got home I realized it had a bow. I could have probably been ok and straighten it as I welded it but when three pieces are bowing outward and one piece bowing inward, it made it difficult.

What would be the easiest way to straighten them out. As of now, I have them clamped down and I am putting pressure on the bowed area and they are straight. Will keep them that way overnight. Hopefully that will work enough.

I have spot heated with a torch to take bows out of steel! But for me, I have about a 50/50 chance getting the result I want :ympray: . I bet some steel fabricators here can give better advice but heat will work. :kewl:

Try placing it on a bench with the bow up and block the ends up on wood blocks and draw the center down with a clamp a bit past what you want and give it a smack with a hammer, the shock from the hammer will usually do the trick. It may take a little trial and error but I prefer cold straightening when possible.

:yth: Small steps. What parts of the smoker are the pieces for? In other words will it show/matter they have a slight bow? Presuming it is slight.
