Mini GF Outside Surface Temps

Post by wbegg » October 14th, 2017, 10:14 pm

Doing a cook, so I borrowed my electrician friends FLIR thermal imaging camera for some surface temp readings. The first pic is around the front door, the second is the top curb/door, and the third, and hottest by far, is the curb/door at the fire box. Quite impressed that no point (other than the fire door/curb) was over 95 degrees. The fire box gets quite hot, so as a tip, a high temp paint is warranted in this area.

All readings in Degrees F (Sorry Tazzies and Aussies)

That's cool!! I've seen a few guys use diamond plate around the FB door seeing as it's the hottest part.

I plan on installing a diamond plate shelf (of sorts) just above the FB. It will prevent me from burning myself (Don't ask) and it will be a great place to "prime" wood chunks before throwing into the FB.

That's cool! I'm surprised the temps around the FB are that high. Mine gets hot enough that I wouldn't recommend touching it, but not so hot that it would burn you. The diamond plate is a good idea.

I really like the imaging and most of the hot spots are expected, I did not realize it was that hot around the Ash Door. I will definitely remember that. I was planning on putting a ledge just above the ash door to protect the seal. Maybe add a piece of diamond plate across the back just to hide possible paint pealing. Is this a good idea or am I over thinking it again. :headwall:

Would sticking insulation in that tubing help any? I'm guessing that heat is conducted and not so much radiated.
