I'm not sure of your plans but it can be lower as long as it doesn't interfere with anything.

Smokincookie,

Here’s what I did for my temp probe. Just welded a bushing on the cc and used a plug to plug it off when I am not needing it.Image

Are you saying the ash pan is suspended or is the fire basket? I have my ash pans setting on the floor of the FB.

In the plans the ash pan is suspended about 1” and am thinking of redesigning it to sit on the floor of the FB and giving more room to change up the FB and not mess up its functionality “ wow that word was hard to get out”

They are probably thinking in terms of keeping the ash/coal bed near the grate. I haven't had any problems with mine.

I’ll probably do that but I just need to figure out how to make a door closing

I’m thinking of putting the ashtray on the floor of the FB and causing the entire door to be the entire opening and making something for it to close against and create a seal that way I could make the fire basket hang from the slides I would put on the sides.

Well I’m actually getting time to build some on the pit, I have the grates built the FB built and hanging; I have to build the fire basket and ash pan a few odds and ends on the cooker and build the undercarriage and paint. I can almost smell the Q!ImageImageImage

I got the log rack built, the FB door strapped and braced the door hanging. Just the small things to get done and the undercarriage built and wheels under it and it’s almost Q time! One question I still have is i have latches that are to be installed on the CC and FB I will post a pic of them should I weld them on and tape them to paint or should I paint it first and bolt them on? Thanks Again ImageImageImage

I welded mine on and taped them up but either way will work. If I could make a suggestion on your fire basket, I would cut a notch out or lower the section that faces the door so that you don't have to pull the basket out to add a log. It isn't a big deal but it makes it a lot faster and easier to add fuel.

My basket is 4'' tall on the door side and I haven't had any issues. Most of the time there's only 1 or 2 small splits on a bed of coals so it doesn't need much to contain it.
