Smokinnewby Rides Again

Post by Smokinnewby » January 23rd, 2018, 10:13 pm

Ok boys, here’s what we got. I have an 80gallon propane tank that I plan to turn into a few cowboy cookers.ImageImageImage
I picked it up for about $60 bucks which I consider a good deal. I got the tank about a week ago and when I picked it out it still had propane in it. Friday when I picked it up they had barley removed all the gas and valves. The smell coming out of this dude is something else. So far I have used a bottle of dawn dish soap in it and filled it as much as I could. I let it sit for a few days then emptied it out and refilled last night again with water. The smell is still pretty strong. I do understand that the propane has saturated the inside steel and a lot of the smell is coming from that. My question to the group and to Frank, RC,DC and Big T what is the best way to make sure I don’t go BOOM BOOM!!!! When cutting the bell ends off? I plan on using a buddies plasma cutter to cut it with. HELP ME OB1, YOU’RE MY ONLY HOPE!!!!!

Usually the safest way is to fill it completely with water and use a cutting wheel to open it up but I'm not sure about the plasma and water. There's probably not any propane left in there, just the smell has penetrated the metal. I'm always nervous anytime I cut open a tank that held a flammable substance but so far I'm still here..lol

Yup^^^^

So the smell stays even a little after a burn out...

But filling it and letting it set is the key

Then make the plunge cut with a cut off wheel or metabo low and let the water drain...

You can plasma cut it and usually it’s no problems...

Only seen one time a “hiccup” ....but that is another story only OB1 can tell...lol!!!

I'd like to see that tank cut longways in half. Be kinda neat to have an oblong cooker instead of a round one.

Tonight I decided to tip up the tank at an angle to make sure I got all of the tank soaking (3rd soaking). I threw a pound of tsp and an entire bottle of dawn in this thing as wellImageImage
I plan on leaving it be till Friday afternoon. I plan then to start cutting on this thing. Hopefully me no BOOM BOOM!!!!

Good news gents, I survived!!!!!!ImageImageImage
I learned a few things today: 1. I’m gonna need a bigger air compressor. 2. My wife truly loves me, she kept freaking out every time a loud noise was made outside, she was scared I was going boom boom. I won’t lie to you, I was pretty nervous myself.
It took a little time because my compressor is only a 20gallon and had to cycle many o times. I would stop each time it would cycle just to be on the safe side. Now to burn these dudes out and get rid of the stink, my wife won’t even come near me cause of the smell from cutting this up.

Great news!! It definitely takes a lot of air to keep up with a plasma cutter.

It a nice night here in the sticks for a burnImageImageImageImage
Got the paint bubbling and peeling and hopefully take care of the majority of the propane smell. Its actually quite nice to clean up the wood scrap pile for all my wood working and the piles of scrap wood pieces the wife kept holding onto till now. It’s as if she knew I would need wood to burn for this project.

Just wanted to check in and let you boys know I’m still here, just busy with work and doing a side job. The side job kinda is funding more of my supplies needed to work on these pits as well as paying for a decent plasma cutter. I definitely like new toys especially when I can use them doing what I enjoy doing. I haven’t forgotten about you gents just needing to take care of this remodel. Quicker I get done the quicker I get new toys

Ok gents, I know it’s been a little bit but I wanted to give you a status update on the cowboy cooker. I got it all painted and still need to season the discoImageImageImageImageImage
The auction is next month and I really hope it raises the funds the kids need for the local 4H group.
My metal working is at a stand still for a little bit cause I am still in the middle of some side jobs. Side jobs= toy money!!!
Here is the reason why the metal working is at a stand still. A side from the side jobs I have another personal project the I am still in the beginning process. I am finally getting my own work shop/ dog house. I started the process a few weeks back with the local inspectors and got all my paper work in order. We broke ground two days ago and already I am so excited.ImageImage

Image note the reverse flow in the background (works like a champ)ImageImageImageImageImageImage
It will not be a huge shop but it will be big enough for me to keep fabricating grills, smokers, fire pit and all my other metal and wood projects. The best part is it is all mine. The wife has clearly stated that...............I should probably get that in writing.
I know it is not exactly smoker building material but it will allow me a place to keep the projects going.
I will post more when I start framing!!!!

A dedicated work space, regardless of size, is priceless. Not having to clean up everything just to park the cars in the garage every night is like getting an extra hour of work time a day. Biggest congrats.

And yes...it’s yours till the wife needs to store the Christmas decorations. And the kids bicycle...but hey, it’s still worth it.

Can’t believe you let Sparky in your backyard...lol
