Propane smokers

Post by Welder10 » February 4th, 2018, 1:10 pm

My brother has bought a propane smoker. His problem that he's having is keeping his temps up above 250 degree. Can anyone tell me what kind of modification we could do to help him. And also, what's the best insulation to use as a liner for the cc if he decided to try that? Thanks.

Pete plugged some of the holes/jets in the burner so he could turn it up enough to keep it lit and temperature low enough to smoke. He used screws

Find out what he bought. If it's a commercial model there's help for sure.

He said it was a Cheaper model stand up propane smoker. He thinks it's to thin to hold temps. What's the insulation called that you guys put in your FB's ? Maybe he could just wrap that around it to hold the heat in.

The insulation is not really designed to stand up to un-protected use. I’d not think you would get much of a lifespan out of it as a wrap....and it’s expensive.

He could try a water heater blanket if he just wants to try an external wrap. You can get them made from denim with a foil backing for about $30.

Didn’t think of that bigt...I’ve also used a moving blanket once in a while if I get a windy day...just keep it away from the firebox, lol.

And I just re-read the original question. It said he can’t get temps over 250. In my experience, 90% of smoking is done at/below this range so I wonder if the jets/gegulator were designed with that in mind. You can get higher btu jets.

And if it is really that thin of metal you might be cautious of getting it too hot for fear of warping.
