New guy first build

Post by JRINNE » February 12th, 2018, 5:55 pm

Hello all. Been lurking a while and decided to do my first build. Was able to pick up a 120 gal air compressor tank (24x68) and am going to make a reverse flow with a warming cabinet on a trailer. I’m sure I’ll have some questions as I go. Any and all input is welcome. I’m in the process of planing and gathering some materials now, but will update as I can. Here’s what I have to start with. Ain’t she purdy?

Thanks for the welcome. Have a question, when mounting the fire box does it matter where the top of it is in relation the the throat opening to the CC?

The throat needs to be as high as possible on the FB. I normally work backwards to see where the FB mounts to the CC. The BP needs to be between 2''-6'' below the bottom grate, I prefer 3.5''-4'' range. The top of the FB can be the same height as the BP or a little lower if you want to install a shadow plate above the throat. The area below the BP can't be smaller than the throat but it can be larger without any issues.

Sorry to butt in here guys but I think you’ve answered the question I’ve been looking for an answer to. Only now I I need to know what heck a “BP” is?! And a shadow plate?

Thanks,
Hydrant

Hi, hope I can answer your questions, this is my understanding of it:

BP = Baffle Plate, the plate which runs almost the length of the cooking chamber, thus creating the reverse flow channel.
Shadow plate = extra shielding plate located below the BP, extending out from the firebox, to prevent a hotspot on the BP in that location.

If I got it wrong, I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be along shortly ;-)

:welcome: :welder: looks good you have a great foundation for a perfect smoker. that is how my smoker started was an old air compressor tank, when you open it up, there may be some oil in there. I lit a fire in my tank and burned it out after I cleaned as much of it out as I could.

do not second guess your self

Well I was able to get a little done today, removed the extra pieces on the top and cut the bell off the one end. The inside was in better shape than I had invisioned, about a 1/3of a bucket of rust scales and oil. I’ll just have to burn it out and give it the once over with the grinder.

I do have another question, I will be putting an opening between the cc ant the wc, should ti be the same size as the opening between the fab and the cc?

Can’t figure out how to post the pic today.

Yes the same size or close as you can get to it will be fine. You can always close it down to where you need it.

Your tank cleaned up nice! Your lucky your compressor was a horizontal unit, you can use the original feet on the tank for the beginning of your smoker stands.

Yeah that worked out well, I’ll be able to attach those feet directly to the trailer.
