BBQ Vessel Harry Caray

Post by BBsSmokeShack » February 20th, 2018, 9:31 am

Hey guys. Not a new guy but haven’t been very active. Thought I’d post pictures of my build. Bought the plans for the BBQ 911 smoker and altered it a bit to make it similar to the Bubba Grill. Never could have imagined how good this thing would cook. I had to learn how to weld to build it but thanks to YouTube and a good friend, we got her done. The trailer looks like crap but I salvaged it from an old cooker that had been smashed by a tree!

So how do you like it? I see you on Face Book cooking for Super Bowl parties and stuff. Is this what you have been using or is this one new? I was wondering by looking at the pictures, does the grease dam on your BP block any of the throat opening? Also if you don't mind is the stack the size the pit calc said it should be? Oh and what does that door weigh?

Keep up the good work.

Just curious when I see different stuff.

Thank you sir! I love it. I’ve been cooking almost solely on this for about 2 years, although I did just buy an old stumps and used it for Super Bowl so I could go to church. I’m just at a conference and realized I never posted my build, lol! The grease dam does slightly because I made the BP into a V to channel the grease. But I added an inch to the throat opening to make up for it. I didn’t use the calculator. I found a 6” pipe in a job site dumpster and put it on there. I guess I got lucky and it worked! I knew I needed to move a lot of air and if it’s too much I just damper it down on the fire box. It runs smooth as a baby’s bottom. If I open it it recovers in just a couple minutes. The door weighs a ton! I am going to put a counter weight on it but it’s nice right now because nobody else can open it!

That is awesome. I know what you mean about the door. I used to think that until I needed other folks to tend to things while I was at work or something. That is when I put my counter weight on mine.

Hold the presses...stop everything.

Did Rodcrafter just imply he handed off control of his smoker???

I’m dreaming.....must be dreaming....

I know right! Well there are those days at work when I'm trying to do some cooking, and work gets in the way. So I have someone else whoever is still in the yard to do some things till I get back. But for the rest of the time NO WAY!

But it happened enough you put a counterweight on the door......I’m thinking that’s pretty often!

:BS:

All right, I’ll stop by jacking this thread and agree that a good counterweight is super nice. I debated on doing one but those doors are heavy. I was more worried about it slipping when I closed it with greasy hands and maybe I’d drop it and crush a thermometer or a finger. They are a bit of work to get properly balanced but worth the effort.

DT I’m a little obsessive so 1 time is enough. I had it rain once while I was doing an overnight cook. That is how I got my trailer rig covered.
