Think I may order one of these 22” old smoky bottom grates and drill additional holes in it to use as a diffuser plate. Probably put a handle on it too since it’s almost as wide as the drum. Image

YTQBBQINC I built my own diffuser. Not quite as flash as the one on udsparts, but it works very well.

Does it spin like a pinwheel with the rising heat? Either way, I like it a bunch.

Hahaha... DT, no it does not spin. Perhaps if one had bearings etc... nahhh .

and YTQBBQINC, it is pretty much a circle with a bunch of slits in it and heated in the middle and slightly bent at an angle. Nothing too scientific I can assure you.

Haha, no RC, like water, I always look for the easiest route, or the path of least resistance. And that was it. I prefer not to over-complicate things... most of the time. Some times complication just works it's way into the job.

Breaking her in with a couple racks of ribs. So far so good. Trying a couple new rub combos today but the drum is working awesome! I’m sold! HahaImageImage

Your cooking rack is very low it probably needs that water pan at that level. This is a little drawing Frank drew on a napkin, (not saying bar) just to be clear. Your rig looks great.

Build two, first UDS

Post by YTQBBQINC » March 24th, 2018, 6:35 pm

Yea, between the heat diffuser and water pan I think I’m safe with the current setup but I’ll be changing some stuff up on the next one. Definitely should have done more research before building this one. Works great but nothing really lines up and the shelf bolts could have better placement. Ribs came out ok. Will definitely firing this thing up quite a bit so all will get better. ImageImage

First brisket on the UDS. Turned out pretty good. A little over but not too far. Probably would have been close to perfect but I got caught up and ended up leaving it in the cooler for around 6hrs. [emoji51]

Got my grate in for my uds. Was pretty surprised how well it came out. I’m out of town for work right now and can’t wait to get back and see how it looks in the drum! I know beggars can’t be choosers but would have been nice if my buddy took the tape and seasoning instruction off it when he took the pic. :-/
