I concur. Briquettes of any brand have binders and coal dust in them. None of which belong in my smoker. I use only 100% lump charcoal. Much better burn and better flavor.

How long a burn do you get with a basket of lump?
And do you add other chunks/sticks of,say, cherry wood or hickory?or stick mostly with the lump?

I used lump in an above average but store bought offset smoker. My basket was about 17 x11x10 inches. I would easily get 5-6 hours of constant heat from it. I sometimes threw a small split on top must many times just smoked with the charcoal....it was made from mesquite....and always had a great outcome.

That lump was the ticket.
No charcoal taste. And actually, the lump was pretty void of taste.
And that smell when the drippings hit the diffuser plate....Image

How did you like the B&B lump? I saw it at the local WM and was going to try it but wasn't sure how it compared to RO Lump.

Never tried RO,but the BB worked good.
Used about 5lbs and burned about 6 hours.
I think it said it had some hickory in it,but had a very nuetral taste.

A little PSA-NEVER,under ANY circumstances, use 1" bolts to support your cooking grate.Otherwise, the pork loin you were salivating over ALL week, WILL fall off into the DIRTY bottom of your barrel.
*Note to self-buy or build a fire basket with a handle so you can remove said fire basket JUST in case you drop your pork loin into the bottom of the barrel.
So,yeah. No pork loin for yours truly this weekend...D'OH!!!

You live and you learn, sometimes the hard way but one thing's for sure, you won't make that mistake again. I just hate that you teased yourself with the thoughts of a great meal and then BAM, you had to eat a sandwich for dinner.

You need the door thing on the UDS... like Frank made a while ago.

That way you could retrieve your tucker as soon as it fell.... =))
