So ive started a new project

Post by Crazycooter » April 9th, 2018, 12:10 pm

After i built my modified mini last year and cooked at a comp with it it has got alot of attention. So much attention i decided to design my own smaller "patio smoker" for the local butcher shop to put up for sale. Prototype is coming along a little bit at a time but scince ive been posting pics on social media there has been alot of interest. Let me know what you think. Shelves will be 5.5 inches apart and be 18 wide by 16 deep

Interesting. A question if I may. Why is the chute lip so high up? On most GF smokers the lip is there to stop water flowing into the chute.

i made the chute extend up a little higher just to get a little bit more capacity. The little fella doesn't hold much. maybe 5 lbs of charcoal if I had to guess. Im thinking after the first 4 are done (already have 4 fireboxes assemblies cut) I might drop the whole thing down so the heat transfer tube is lower in the cook chamber for more rack space. then extend the charcoal shoot back up for a little more capacity in that department.

Im going to follow this thread. I would love a GF but even the mini seems a bit large/heavy for a small household. When I cook, I do 1 brisket or 1 boston butt or 3 racks of ribs at a time. So a larger smoker is way overkill. When you get all the details sorted out I would love to see you post the final measurements.

No problem. Building a mess of them as soon i make sure i dont have any issues with the first. Also designed a hitch mount that un pins and swings the smoker out away from the tailgate but thats later down the road.

Thanks a ton. Are you using .5 inch for the firebox or .25?

Very interested in the business side of smokers. Would love to turn a few out of my garage for resale. Looking forward to seeing this progress.

Got some more done the last 2 days. Doors are all welded up and smoothed out. Got them hung today. Gonna make some changes on the rest of them like lower the firebox assembly so i can make more space between the racks. Couple other little things

Looking really good. :kewl:
I'm not sure I would not put an end plate on that transfer tube. Just to stop the heat from blasting your door. Also a drip strip on the door to stop fat/grease etc from dribbling over your door seal.

Yea still need an end plate for the tube and the drip strip. Still have some odds and ends to do. Anyone know of a small slam latch that i can mount front to back scince the door is the same width of the smoker? I was going to use toggle latches but slam latches look so much better

That is one cool project. I was wondering about your exhaust stack as well? Keep us updated. :kewl:

Hooked the guru up to it Saturday and cooked 2 racks of ribs and a pretty good size pork but on it. still had one rack left for more food if I wanted. after it warmed up to 300 I filled the chute back up with charcoal and started the timer. ran it at 300 for a few hours then backed it down to about 265 and put in my ribs. all said and done it ran for 8.5 hours between those 2 temps with about 4 or 5 lbs of lump charcoal. I will post pictures after work

Nice. Good that it is economical.
