Thermometer Question.

What length stem should I use for the Mini? I swore I saw it in the plans/shopping list, but cannot for the life of me find what size Thermometer to get.

Another cold night in the shop. Really going to have to invest in some propane for that heater.

With the welding table complete, it was time to inventory all of my firebox puzzle pieces. It is going to be a long day of building fire boxes tomorrow.



I was hesitant at first to have the pieces laser cut, but man will it save a lot of time and headache.

I use a buddy down in Florida. He ships via flat rate USPS so shipping is quite reasonable. He can cut anything you imagine. When I get home i can get you his info.

Plasma table did the 16ga perfect, but it struggled with the 1/2” but that all depends on the plasma cutter. Your friend’s may handle 1/2” with ease.

I like the laser parts because they are precise, clean, and you can go straight from package, clamp, and weld. It’s cheating, I know.

Damn 1/2"? Where does this smoker use 1/2" material?

There are a few pieces in the firebox. Have you bought the plans yet? If you opt for the dxf drawings everything is laid out and nested.

I have not bought the plans yet. I am still trying to decide what I am going to do. You may have already mentioned this but how much $ do you have in materials and having it all cut?

All in is about $1150 having the firebox laser cut and the 16ga CNC plasma cut.

Started with sheet metal today. As I expected and feared it is a little difficult to weld sheet metal. I’m going to have to adjust my welder and dial it in for the thin stuff.

With thinner stuff try stitch welding it. Do a little bead leave a big gap do another small bead. Then when it is cool, repeat until all the welds are filled. It does take a whole heap longer but saves on/minimises warping etc. Even do a bit on one panel and move to another panel and go around until all the welds are filled in.

Yea it is going to take a good long while, and I have two more to look forward to. Ouch. Problem I am having is getting the puddle to flow right. It either wants to just sit on top of the metal and not give me good penetration, or it tries to blow out the square tube or the sheet.This first one will be my buddy's. I can see that already.

I had the same problem on the interior sheets. I had to fix a lot of blow outs. Some areas my welding looked great then all of a sudden it would start to blow through. I did get better and much better when i switched to .023 wire and I played with the wire feed speed

When welding thin material to a ticker material I find it really helps if you "hang out" on the thicker longer, just a quick dip over to the thin material. Another way that works is to "tack tack tack tack" with the trigger.

Sometimes welding down hand in the vertical position helps due to the fact that you carry less heat in the weld zone.

I find that as long as I turn the wire speed down and the amps way down I can weld surprisingly thin metals. You may need smaller wire to pull it off really well.
