The Case 225 Super Q "Rib Digger" is finally complete!

Post by Mmmmm » February 1st, 2014, 10:12 am

I spend most of my days in the seat of a Case 580 Super M backhoe. I thought that would be a nice theme for my new smoker. Did someone say they can't ever get away from work?

Folding side shelves. I used zinc coated pins to hold the shelves in keeping with the theme.

Lower vent openings.

Exhaust and fake air intake precleaner which can be spun off to allow extra airflow if needed.

Charcoal basket with heat deflector.

This thing is getting seasoned with a few strips of bacon this morning and then if it can achieve temp it's getting some spares this afternoon for a maiden voyage. Or should I say to wear the paint off the bucket?

I also plan to make a ring with three rebar cross bars that will sit on a set of bolts 2" below the lid. I'm planning to order some of the stainless hooks from the Pit Barrel Cooker company so I can hang ribs. If they can get 8 racks in a PBC I should be able to get a dozen or so in a full size drum, right?

Awesome Drum!!!!! Love the theme.

Now totally off topic,,,,, can anyone tell me how best to cook a pork chop to get the rich tasty smoke flavor.??

Someone told me to come here and look for some Cat named Frank,,,,, I never see him on here though.!!

Well, here are just a couple shots. I didn't have a lot of time for photography because we had these ribs on the UDS, two chickens on the rotisserie on one of my kettles, and mushrooms and zucchini in the BGE. It was a fair amount to keep track of but I did grab these for you guys.

Also I should mention that I lit this thing at about 9:15 am and shut it down at around 8 pm. I had several of the 8.8 lb bags of Cowboy lump left over from last fall when Home Depot cleared it out so I dumped in two bags. When we shut it down after running for almost 11 hours it had only used maybe a third of that charcoal. The coals weren't even ashed over in the outer edge of the basket.

We did have a bit of a tough time regulating temp. It wanted to fall off over time even with the ball valve fully open so we would take a cap off and get it back up, then think we had it regulated only to have it fall off after a while. Finally we replaced one of the threaded caps with a second ball valve and with that half open we could then control the temp perfectly with the one on the riser. The last couple hours it locked in at 255 and didn't move a degree up or down.
