Thinking about sanding the pit down to shiny metal and applying a poly coat.

Is there a poly coat that is heat resistant?

Or is paint my only real option?

Rust-oleum makes one good to 2000F.

I'm a big believer that paint is only as good as the prep. If it doesn't have proper surface it won't stick.
