I saw some on here awhile back that were mechanically attachted to the door and propped the door open by falling into a catch. Can't find them again.

Found what I was looking for. Any issues with this design?

Those will work fine as long as you build them strong enough to hold the weight of the door.

First time that thing slams shut with with your arm in the chamber you will be rewarded with a trip to the ER.

Also concerned that it will take 2 hands to close it (one for the door and one to release the gravity catch). I usually have something in one hand when I need to open the door on mine and would find the 2 handed close and the risk of slamming shut a deal breaker for me.

I just put a counterweight on mine and let the weight lay back on the tank. I open and close my heavy door with 1 hand and I know it's either open or closed.

Yes DT, those are good points. I do the same with counter weights. I like it cause it is light enough to handle with one hand

Decided to go with counter weights.

I feel that is a good choice. It's foolproof, will never fail and counterweights just look cool.
