Has anyone put a 5" dial on a DP GF? I've seen a number of them with 4" dials, but I'm wondering if a much bigger dial would look too overwhelming on the door.

It’s your pit....make it like you want it. I see no reason way a larger dial wouldn’t look ok.

I don't see a 5" as being an issue. I have a 3" (IIRC) on mine, but I practically never use it as I have an automatic temp control on it as well.

Yes. This will be purely cosmetic. Going with the same auto temp control you have, so the functional gauge will be the one on my web browser ;).
I found some good ones for $40 or so. I'll grab one and mount it up.
We're planning on putting a shroud over it. Figure a 6" pipe cut in half, then mounted over the dial.

Hrrrm..... IIRC, mine has a jam nut on the threads for a screwdriver so that the dial can easily be aligned. Might be a little difficult to tighten or loosen the jam nut with a fairly close shroud. You might want to get your thermometer before welding up the shroud.

I was planning on having the shroud just cover the top half, not surround the whole thing.
I'm thinking, take a 6" pipe, cut a length that is the distance from the face of the dail to the surface of the door + 1", then cut the pipe in half to make a half circle. Weld that in the appropriate place. I'd be able to get to the jam nut from below.

If you put an oring on the threads of the thermometer you can just hand tighten it and have adjustment to position it just right.

I like the shrouds, functional and look good. I cook mostly at 225 so my therms are cockeyed so that 225 is straight up. makes it easy for me to glance at them and see where I need to be.
